How Is The Way We Are Handling Waste Wrong?
When it comes to picking up our dogs waste only about 60% of pet owners do so. The other 40% just leave it sitting around. This is not a good thing since it has various bacterias and parasites that can be transmited to humans and other animals. This can be through the waste itself or if it contaminates the ground or our watersources.
Now onto doggy bags, why are those so bad you ask? It is because of the materials they are made of. As they sit in the landfills, microplastics in the bags move into the soil releasing methane gas. These plastic bags can also take thousands of years to decompose.
For cat waste, clay-based litter is not biodegradable. It also is not obtained sustainably, it uses strip mining to get the materials. This is damaging vegetation, trees, rocks, and topsoil.
Crystal litter is also not a sustainable litter either. It is made from quartz which is not renewable. When producing this type of litter, can create the most carbon dioxide over all other litters.
How Can We Improve?
The best way to take care of your dogs waste is to get compostable doggy bags. These types of doggyy bags are biodegradable and decompose in about 6 months. For cats it is better to use alternative litters like bamboo or recycled paper.
